Te Ataahia Hurihanganui
Te Arawa, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Ira, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne.
Her professional background is in education and curriculum design and development. She has been teaching languages (Te Reo Māori, Italian, English as a Second Language, and English as a Foreign Language) for the past nine years; both locally, and abroad, with a strong focus on adult education.
Te Ataahia is a passionate linguist with an ear for learning languages – having learnt four within total immersion settings, and later studying them as a second language learner. She brings this experience with her into her teaching, enhancing the learning environment and better connecting with her learners.
Recently, Te Ataahia was contracted to design and develop the Reo Māori curriculum for one of New Zealand’s largest Community Education Centres, which has had immense success, including a National Māori Language Award nomination. She is a regular Te Reo Māori columnist for a national ECE magazine and has consulted on some major projects for important national organisations including Te Papa museum, the Ministry of Education, and the NZ Book Council.
Outside of work, Te Ataahia dedicates her time to her family; especially enjoying beautiful, loving moments with her husband and two young babies. She has a passion for travel, diverse cultures, good food, and anything creative!
